Indian States at a Glance 2008-09: Performance, Facts and Figures presents information on the 29 states and 6 union territories of India in a set of 22 volumes. A compilation of the latest facts and figures, ranging from the basic socio-economic and demographic indicators to development parameters, these books also provide brief profiles of the states covering their history, culture, cuisine, handicrafts, places of tourist interest as well as an account of their performance vis-à-vis other states

Jammu and Kashmir, a state with tremendous beauty and economic potential, has not been able to hit the high-growth path due to militancy and political tensions with neighbouring countries. Growth and development need a stable and secure environment to flourish and this precondition has been missing in this state. Yet, there has been a concerted effort at raising income through activities such as horticulture, agro-based units, and small manufacturing units, as well as at improving the power infrastructure in the state. On the social front, there is a strong gender disparity that shows up in the literacy rates and the sex ratio. However, health indicators have been improving. Though the state remains a low-income state due to political constraints, there has been some improvement in the situation, making it a relatively safe destination for tourists and industry once again.
