Indian States at a Glance 2008-09: Performance, Facts and Figures presents information on the 29 states and 6 union territories of India in a set of 22 volumes. A compilation of the latest facts and figures, ranging from the basic socio-economic and demographic indicators to development parameters, these books also provide brief profiles of the states covering their history, culture, cuisine, handicrafts, places of tourist interest as well as an account of their performance vis-à-vis other states

Kerala, a small state at the southern tip of India, ranks at the top of all states in human development indicators. Its model of social-sector development is often held up as a stellar example, not only to other states in India but also to many countries in the developing world. However, despite its achievements in education, health, infrastructure and governance, the state has not been able to provide sufficient employment for its skilled manpower. Due to a lack of diversified economic activity, Kerala has a lower rate of growth than the national average and a lower per capita income than its neighbouring states.
