The Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), the premier organization for social science research in India, conducts periodic surveys in the major disciplines of the social sciences to assess disciplinary developments as well as to identify gaps in research in these disciplines. As part of this unique endeavour, surveys in psychology have been undertaken since the 1960s. Psychology in India, the latest survey, provides a comprehensive and up-to-date coverage of the major issues and debates in psychology in the country. Thematically divided into four volumes, and a total of twenty-four chapters, each volume highlights a core area of the field and provides focused discussions on topical issues in each of these areas, as well as on emergent concerns.

Volume 4, Theoretical and Methodological Developments, comprises six original essays. These essays, written by eminent scholars in the field of psychology, cover a wide range of topics—from an appraisal of the methodological developments in psychological research in India during the last one decade, to the efforts towards developing indigenous perspectives in psychology. Important psychoanalytic contributions and writings coming out of India and the concerns of gender in psychological research in India have been discussed in detail. This volume takes an overarching view of issues from the past as well as those concerning the future developments in the field of psychology in India. Some critical perspectives on the development in theory, research and practice in psychology in India are also discussed.
