Psychology in India. Volume 2: Social and Organizational Processes
The Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), the premier organization for social science research in India, conducts periodic surveys in the major disciplines of the social sciences to assess disciplinary developments as well as to identify gaps in research in these disciplines. As part of this unique endeavour, surveys in psychology have been undertaken since the 1960s. Psychology in India, the latest survey, provides a comprehensive and up-to-date coverage of the major issues and debates in psychology in the country. Thematically divided into four volumes and a total of twenty-four chapters, each volume highlights a core area of the field and provides focused discussions on topical issues in each of these areas, as well as on emergent concerns.
Volume 2, Social and Organizational Processes, comprises six original essays and an overarching introduction. It analyses social processes at the individual, interpersonal, group, organizational and societal levels. The contributors bring into focus the interface between individuals and social structures, since the growth and development of individuals invariably takes place within the context of institutions and organizations. The chapters address the way social psychologists explore the social world; the ways in which the notions of the ‘self’ and ‘individual’ constitute the basis of all human affairs; the salient features of research related to individual and group level processes in the area of organizational behaviour (OB) relevant for the Indian setting; the nature of organizations in India in their cultural and institutional contexts; psychological research in India on schooling conducted during the last decade, discussing the historical development of school education, and the research related to systemic variables, pedagogic processes, and students’ achievement; and the contribution of psychology towards understanding the concept, processes, outcomes, and challenges of societal development.
